My mom and I went to see Avenue Q, funnily enough, at a local children’s theatre. It was a delightfully funny adult rated stage musical put on by actors who used puppetry to tell the story. It was definitely not a children’s show, despite being put on by the usual children’s company. There was a mature audiences warning and I do not believe that any minors were allowed in. They were serving alcohol as well so that was another tell tale sign.
The show pokes fun at societal “norms” in a very light-hearted way. It was absolutely hilarious! I have had the soundtrack in my iTunes for a couple years so I knew what to expect. Some of the show’s hit songs include: The Internet Is For Porn, Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist and You Can Be As Loud As The Hell You Want (When You’re Making Love). I am sure Avenue Q might offend some people as there is course language and some sexual content. Most of our audience found the show brilliant, hence the standing ovation. It was well deserved.
As theatre is a HUGE part of my life, I have seen a lot of shows. But I can willingly say that this show is in the top 5 that I have ever seen. And it was put on by an amateur theatre troop. Just imagine what it’s like on Broadway!!!
If you have the chance to see the show, I would recommend it. Be prepared to laugh!
