Mary Poppins Blunder

Mary Poppins the Musical

On Sunday, my Mom and I went to see Mary Poppins the Musical. As a part of Broadway Across Canada, this wonderful stage production came to Calgary for 8 shows last week. We have seasons tickets to BAC and so we were delighted to be seeing such a wonderful stage production. We got our tickets months ago and knew that the show would be on Sunday. So to kill two birds with one stone, we decided that I would go over to my Mom’s house after work and we would make a bulk batch of cabbage rolls (for the freezer) and then we would go to the show in the evening. Of course we had to enjoy freshly made cabbage rolls for dinner as well. Everyone was invited for supper and then Mom and I would head out.

Normally the shows that come to Calgary start at 7:30PM. As we like to get to the theatre a little earlier (to get a good parking spot), we had figured we would leave the house around 6:25 and have lots of time to spare. We finished eating our cabbage rolls just before 6PM and we lazed around watching the end of the Olympic women’s marathon. I had a sudden thought to double check the tickets to make sure I had the right ones with me. I took a look at them and to my horror I realized the show started at 6:30, NOT 7:30!!! I started freaking out!!! We’ve never been late for a show before. We dropped everything and ran out the door. It’s about a half hour drive and the whole way I was panicking because I knew we weren’t going to make it. My mom drove (a little faster than the speed limit) as I was freaking out too much in the passenger’s seat. What was worse about arriving late is that we had front row seats and so everyone would have bene watching us if we were somehow allowed to walk into the auditorium late. I always tsk tsk those people who arrive late and here we were going to do it! AHH.

Arriving at the theatre at 6:25, we had to park at the neighbouring lot and walk (well we ran) over to the theatre. We managed to get into the theatre and since I am a little faster than my Mom, I ran into the bathroom and she managed to catch up as I was coming out. We got to the auditorium doors just as they were closing them and we sat down in our seats. Not even 30 seconds later, the show started.

It was a miracle. I cannot believe we made it! The whole experience was so scary and nerve wracking. Like I said, I was freaking out the entire car ride and as we were running to the theatre. It was terrible. I will NEVER let something like that happen again. I will always be sure to check my tickets long in advance for the date and time.

The musical turned out to be great. Although I am a little biased as I love almost ALL musicals  However, they had a couple technical difficulties during the show, one of which they had to pull the curtain for a few minutes while they solved the problem ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Oh and Mary Poppins fell down the stairs! It was scary to see, but thank goodness someone was there to catch her. Phew. But everything turned out okay and the show went on. I even bought a t-shirt as a souvenir!

Oh! This’ll remind me to triple-check our tickets when we’re going to see Phantom of the Opera in London! My first musical ever, I’m a bit behind you ๐Ÿ˜‰
