Peter and his dad worked super hard last weekend and replaced our roof with new shingles. The front part of our roof was getting worse and worse and we decided that the issue couldn’t be ignored any longer. We had the insurance company come out and assess if there was any weather damage. They noted there was some wind and hail damage, but only to the front of the roof. They were going to replace only the front part of the roof and it would cost $2400 for parts and labour. Since Peter’s father is a all around handyman, we decided that the boys could replace the roof instead. We priced out all of our materials and it turned out to cost around $2400 for the entire roof. Plus, we got a better type of shingle. The type the insurance company was going to give us were an “older model” and only had a 2 year warranty. The new type are a double-laminate fiberglass shingle and have a warranty of 35 years. We took a cash settlement from the insurance company and used that money toward the final cost. I think we made the right decision by going with a better shingle and doing all the work ourselves.
Unfortunately the weekend we decided to do the roof, it was almost 30°C each day with no cloud cover at all. I felt so sorry for the boys on the roof with the sun beating down on them. They drank so much water and had to take a lot more breaks than they would have had to normally. Peter has a very low heat tolerance in the first place, so it was torture for him. I am not sure if he will ever want to do a roof again. However, the roof looks amazing and with the new shingles that I have a feeling we won’t need to replace it for many years to come.
Supplies being delivered onto the roof.
