NaBloPoMo: Day 4
The Broadway rock musical Rock of Ages was in town last week and my Mom and I went to see it. I might add that we went grudgingly. We have seasons tickets to Calgary’s broadway tour shows and this was included. We really did not want to go to the show. Rock is definitely not the type of music we listen to. We enjoy country and even sometimes some of the new country has too much guitar wailing.
We thought that we should probably watch the movie before we went to see the musical. However, we procrastinated on that and never ended up watching the movie. Plus, it might have given us the excuse not to go to the play if we had really disliked the movie.
So the musical was okay. The music was SO loud, but we were also sitting my a huge speaker. As we expected, there was a lot of guitar wailing. My mom got a huge headache and didn’t come back into the theatre after the intermission. I had a headache as well by the end of the show, but I stayed for the whole thing. I didn’t mind the music and I think that was because I had heard most of the songs before (mainly thanks to GLEE). The set was really cool with guitars all over the walls and they used a giant screen to help tell the story. It was neat. Unfortunately, I did not think the lead actor had a very strong singing voice. I found myself wincing when he hit some of his notes, a lot of which were off key. Also I couldn’t really understand what he was saying as he did not enunciate. Ah well, it certainly appeared like everyone on stage had an awesome time rocking it out!
After seeing the play, I decided that I had better watch the movie. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed the movie. I was glad to have the background from the play to help me along with the story. The one bad thing about the movie was Tom Cruise. I really don’t like him as an actor and his character was super repulsive. His character acted so terrible, but honestly, I couldn’t tell if Tom was acting or if it was really him. So slimy and stuck up. Yuck. Of course the movie was kind of spoofy and over the top, but that was part of the reason I liked it. I found myself laughing at the stupidity. Although I dislike Russel Brand, I LOVED his character and his relationship with Alec Baldwin in the movie. Their duet was the best of the entire movie. So funny. I think that I might have liked the movie better than the play if it hadn’t been for Tom Cruise.
