I saw one of my friends write a post about what occurred in 2012. It was categorized by month and I thought it was a great way to round off the year. So here I am completing my own Year In Review. I am sure there will be some events that I won’t remember, but at least I’m writing something.
This month started off in the tanning booths because I wanted to get some kind of base tan for when we went to Mexico in February. As I had expected, it turned out my skin was really fair and didn’t like the lights in the tanning beds. It resulted in me getting a “sun” burn 3 times before I decided that was enough cancer risk for me and swearing off tanning beds forever.
I also got to kitty sit my first cat. It was marvelous and I definitely fell in love. I somehow thought having that kitty in the house would help convince Peter to let me get one. Boy was I ever wrong!! He’s just as solidly saying no as he was this time last year.
Peter and I went on our first flying vacation together. The last time he had been on a commercial plane was when he was 2, so this was an interesting experience for him. We went to our first ever all inclusive resort in Mexico. One of Peter’s friends got married on the beach and it was a beautiful and intimate gathering. Although the weather wasn’t super nice, I was still able to strut around in my bikini for the first time. Boo yah. Although there was a group of 15 of us, it was nice to spend some time away from home together with Peter.
My Mom won concert tickets to Dierks Bentley and Chad Brownlee, as well as backstage passes to play an air hockey game with Dierks. So we got to meet him and my Mom beat him at the hockey game! After Chad’s set, he was out in the lobby signing autographs, so I was able to meet him too.
This was the month of the iPad. My Mom bought the iPad 3, that had just been released, and she gave me her old iPad 1! I honestly didn’t care that it was 2 versions out of date, I was just excited to have an iPad of my very own. I mainly wanted it for watching movies and reading iBooks, so thus far, it has treated me very well. In fact, I am writing this blog post on it right now. It’s so handy. I love my iPhone, but the bigger screen on this thing definitely has its advantages.
With my iPad in tow, my Mom and I took a trip to Cambridge, Ontario to visit our family. We also stayed in Toronto for a few days because my Mom had a conference. I got to wander and shop all around downtown Toronto and we were able too take in a show one of the nights. We saw Shrek The Musical, which was one I had wanted to see forever. It was all I had imagined and we enjoyed even better from the front row
I went to my first Comic Con with Peter this month. It was really awesome. Although we didn’t buy any autographs or see any panels, just knowing that I was in the same building as the cast of Star Trek: TNG was very cool. Peter and I will be going again in 2013, especially since Weird Al will be doing a concert then too!
Another some-what exciting event is that I finally watched the Rocky movies. I really didn’t want to see them because I hate fighting and boxing, but Peter convinced me that there was more to the movies than fighting. Turns out, I loved them! The first 2 movies were the best, obviously. I even told Peter that I want to name our son Rocky haha. Not kidding. Seriously!
Nothing really happened in May. It was Peter’s birthday and I made him cheesecake, as usual. I had a lot of “depression” and guilt this month to do with my weight loss. I was really mad at myself for falling so far off the wagon. So this month was very whiney and I bet I wasn’t super fun to be around. Soo, moving on!
I took the leap this month and signed up for some investments. As I knew I should, I needed to start planning for retirement early enough so that I can actually retire one day. I had a savings account that earned very minimal interest. So I went into my bank and bought into some moderate risk investments. So far, they have earned me money, but who is the say what will happen in the market. Even if I do lose some money, the market will always be headed up.
My brother got a new kitten! His very own furbaby. I went over to his house quite a few times to play with the little one. She had so much energy and would play non-stop for hours. An adorable little ball of fur. As of now, she still has just as much energy as ever. She climbs on everything and it even led to my parent’s not being able to put up a Christmas tree, because they knew she would have it knocked over in seconds. She’s a little terror, but a very very cute one, so that makes up for everything!
July was a busy month. We had 6 family members come into town from Ontario and we had to spread them out among 2 houses so that they all had a bed to sleep in. My little cousin came to town as well, so my Grandma got to spend time with her first (and currently only) great grandchild. We all did a lot of touristy things while they were here. It was the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede this year and so we spent a few days down at “the grounds.” We also went to Drumheller to see the Dinosaur bones at the Royal Tyrell Museum. I enjoyed having everyone around. We were able to celebrate 3 birthday while they were here. July was a great month for births!!
Later in the month, my Mom, Dad, Peter and I headed off to our usual campground in Cranbrook for a nice week of camping. Mom and I took a day trip down to Kalispell, Montana for a little shopping. The rest of the week was spent cross stitching and swimming in the lake. Very relaxing.
Most of this month was spent outside in my gravity chair. I read many books and soaked up all the UV rays I could. Most days reached 25°C-30°C. It was glorious weather and I was definitely in my element! I think I read close to 9 books in this month alone. It was crazy. My computer was definitely neglected!!
My husband and father in-law spent one hot and smoldering weekend building us a new roof. I wish that it hadn’t been so hot for them, because they did not have a fun time with the sun blaring on them all day. Alas, the roof looks great and we saved a bundle of money having them do it themselves.
One of my close friends had a baby on our anniversary (September 1st) and I was over at her house a lot his month to visit with her and the little one. I also threw a baby shower for her. I even had my hand at making my first ever decorated sugar cookies, especially for the party. I might have been a little stressed out this month with all the planning for the shower and then everything else I had to do as well.
My favourite musical, Next To Normal, was playing at Theatre Calgary this month. As I volunteer as an usher for TC, I was luckily able to see the show 4 times. It was so amazing. The best part was I was seeing the show for free each time. I am sure the employees were sick of seeing my face. Haha.
My Mom and I actually started going back to Weight Watchers full time and we really committed this month. I did manage to lose about 5lbs until we stopped going in November because of my vacation. Although I am not back at my original goal weight quite yet, I aim to be there sometime in 2013.
Honestly, I have no idea how I managed to lose 5lbs because this was the month of Mcdonald’s Monopoly! I swear, I got so addicted to trying to win that we probably went at least 3 times a week. Sure, we won some of the little prizes, like a free cheeseburger or coffee, but it was the big ones I wanted. I entered the code words into the computer every day and we had the game board as well. Nothing. Not even the wal-mart gift card or anything. Boo. Looking back on it, it seems like a waste of money now. Gambling = bad!! Hey, at least we ate A LOT of tasty food
Peter and I took our second flying vacation together, however, this time it was just the two of us. We planned everything ourselves and had an enormous amount of fun together. We went to Florida and visited Disney World, Universal Studios and even took a day trip visit Peter’s parents vacation rental in Cape Coral. We saw Mickey Mouse and ate a lot of delicious food. It was so fun to spend 10 full days together. We didn’t even get sick of each other You can see my entire Florida Journal here.
I decided to try out something new this month and I participated in NaBloPoMo! Sure, it was a bit of a challenge as I am used to only blogging once or twice a week, but it was so much fun. I honestly thought it was going to be hard to think of subject matter to blog about. With going away to Florida for 10 days of the month, it was easy to write a journal of what we did during each day of the trip. The rest of the month seemed like a piece of cake. I might even do it again next year!
The first ever Calgary IHOP opened. Jaw dropping, I know. I love pancakes and I am so happy to have the restaurant so close to home. No more day trips to Edmonton just for pancakes!
We had a few medical issues with my Grandma this month and it was really scary. Luckily, she is doing so much better now and hopefully she will stay healthy and happy for many years to come. Because of our family issues, my Uncle flew in from Ontario for a few days. Even amongst the drama, we were able to go for 3 runs together. All were early morning runs, including a run at -19°C. It was brutal, but I am happy to be able to say that I survived it!
Unfortunately, I basically threw my diet out the window this month. I still haven’t resumed it and won’t until I get back from Las Vegas on the 7th of January. I really need to get back to the gym as well. My body is kind of hating me right now.
So alot of things seemed to happen this year, but nothing too drastic. I think I had a great year and I sure hope 2013 is just as wonderful.
