When Peter and I got home on Saturday night from the airport we found an unpleasant surprise waiting for us. While we were gone, someone had dumped a computer desk in the alley behind our house. My first thought was what else there was around our backyard that someone might have left as well. Luckily the desk was the only thing. However, the biggest question we were left puzzling with was WHY would someone do this? It really shows how some people just don’t care. As long as it is off their hands, they don’t care who has to deal with it. Out of sight, out of mind.
I would never in a million years imagine dumping my old junk on someone’s property. It is illegal and downright appalling. I was honestly very upset and stressed out about it. As it was a large piece of furniture, I knew that the weekly garbage pick up would not take items like that. I didn’t think it was right that we would have to take it to the dump and pay $10+ to have it off our hands, especially when it was not even our desk!! I just didn’t know what to do.
Then I had a stroke of brilliance, if I do say so myself. I called our city’s 311 information line to find out what to do in this type of situation. They didn’t hesitate and made up a case file right away. I didn’t even know what was happening when the operator said that they would send out a truck in the next few days to have the desk taken away!! She gave me a case # and sent me on my way. I was so shocked. I didn’t expect them to actually come and get it. I thought they would just give me some sort of solution that I would have to do on my own. It made my day. I was relieved to have this silly little problem taken care of.
Unfortunately, I still don’t understand why someone would leave the desk outside of our house. It makes no sense to me. Also, why choose our house over anyone else’s on the block? Bad luck, I suppose. Anyway, the desk is gone now and everything is okay again.
