I went for my first winter run of the year today. Man was it ever cold. Although, there was virtually no wind, so I was very lucky. It could have been much colder. However, I was accustomed to beautiful fall weather, as that was the last time I went running, so the brisk cold was like a slap in the face.
The most important thing about running in the winter is wearing a lot of layers. I can always take some items off if I get too hot, but I can’t put more on that I don’t have with me. So I bundled up in a pair of tights, a pair of running pants, a long sleeved running shirt, a tight fitting running jacket, a looser wind breaking running jacket, thicker socks, gloves and a toque. I wish I had worn my ear band under the toque because the bottom of my ears were a little chilly where the toque didn’t cover. Other than that, I was perfectly warm. My feet were frozen at first, but once I was running for awhile, they acclimatized.
It was a difficult run today. One reason was because I hadn’t been running since October 9th. I felt so out of shape. It is very easy to fall out of it. Another reason was because of the snow on the ground. It is amazing and very disappointing how many people do not shovel their sidewalks. I had to be so careful that I didn’t slip and hurt myself because a lot of the snow has turned to ice now. Then I got to the walks that had ice melter on them and the snow was very slushy and also dangerous. There really was no way to win. I just had to be careful and take my pace a little slower.
For the last two years by this time, I had been training for a race that I participated in with my friend (review here and semi-review here). However, I will not be doing the run again. LONG STORY short, the organization that sponsors the run has come out as anti-homosexual. I refuse to support a charity that will not accept everyone in this world. Some comments have been made by the company stating that gays deserve to die. Although that statement was not spoken quite like that, the interpretation remains and I still do not want to have anything to do with the company. I am sad that I won’t be running with my friend, but we might find another race to do together one day. Well I’ve gotten a little off topic.
After today, I don’t know how much more winter running I will do. I know, it’s the beginning of winter and I am already chickening out. Well I really think I prefer to stay inside the gym when it’s so cold outside. This stance could change so easily. I guess I’ll see how my mood is tomorrow.
