How I spilled the beans

First of all, I want to thank everyone for all their kind words of congratulations on our announcement. Twitter, Facebook and this blog were filled with many outpourings of support. I am glad that it came as a surprise for most people! Again, hardest secret to keep of my entire life haha. So today I wanted to reveal to everyone how I spilled the beans on my pregnancy.

The stories about how I let everyone know about my pregnancy are quite exciting, if I do say so myself. I wanted to tell my husband and our families in a unique way. I didn’t want to just blurt it out and that would be it. I fancied involving a bit of guess work.

Let me start with Peter. He was the first person I told, of course. I wanted to tell him while including something he loved. We have a little take out sushi place by our house and we love it. Seriously the best sushi we have ever had. Peter’s favourite thing to order are these little shrimp dumplings. So I devised a plan of when he would open his package of dumplings, there would be a little note inside that read: “Well I’m glad you like dumplings, because we have a little dumpling on the way!!!” I wrote the note in advance and had it all ready to put into the container as soon as we got home. When we arrived at the sushi place, we found it to be closed. It was under renovation. Can you believe that?! The most important day of our lives and restaurant was foiling my plan. Peter didn’t understand why I was so upset that they were closed. So we improvised and stopped at subway instead. We always get cookies to eat after our subs, so I had another idea for the reveal. When we got home, I “conveniently” forgot my purse in the car and asked Peter to go back outside and get it for me. While he was outside, I quickly scrawled a second note that replaced the word dumplings with cookies. I slipped it into the cookie bag and waited. It was torture while we ate our subs waiting for Peter to finally reach for the cookies. When he saw the note, at first he was confused, then his head snapped up and he looked at me and asked, “You’re pregnant?!” I said yes, through tears of course, and we smiled and cuddled together. Two lives changed forever!!

With my family, I planned an entire dinner that was baby themed. I served baby back ribs, baby corn, baby potatoes, baby spinach salad and baby cucumber. Peter and I simply invited them for dinner and told them we were having ribs. We didn’t say anything further to anyone so that we could just sit and wait until someone noticed. Everyone was going about their business loading their plates and no one suspected a thing. I finally couldn’t stand it anymore and I asked Peter to hand me the baby cucumbers. Normally, I would have just called them cucumbers, right?! My Mom heard and then everything clued into her brain. She asked me if we were trying to tell her something and of course I started tearing up and I nodded. My Dad and Grandma were too busy loading their plates to notice. My Mom had to get their attention and she said that we were trying to tell them something and they should pay attention. After plenty of hugs and congratulations, we finally sat down to enjoy our meal. It’s the first grandchild in my family and so everyone was super happy. My Dad was so funny as I think he was in a slight state of shock. He said, “Wow, that is the first time anyone has ever done that to me!” YEAH! Got everyone and no one suspected!

With Peter’s parents, I wanted to do something that involved them figuring out some kind of puzzle. I wrote out a riddle and asked them to do it together. This is what it read:
Step one: Solve the math problems:
a) 89,656 / 44828= _____
b) 11-10= _____
c) The square root of 4= _____
d) (three squared) + (four squared) = _______
Step two: Each answer corresponds to a letter in the alphabet (numbered in order). What do they spell= __________
So of course the answer was BABY! They were super surprised as well and hadn’t suspected a thing. We don’t see his parents as much as we see mine, so it wasn’t too hard to keep this secret from them. However, they were very excited as it is also the first grandchild on Peter’s side of the family.

With most of my close friends, I just told them and/or showed them the picture from my ultrasound. I didn’t want to go into anything too crazy for so many people. It was still very special to tell everyone at my own pace.

Everyone seems super as happy and excited as we are. We can’t wait to meet this new little person.

I LOVE the baby themed dinner! That is so awesome! I’ve been thinking a lot on how I would announce my future pregnancy. I know the stakes are going to be high because everyone has been bugging me about it for SO long, haha.

Again, congrats to you both! So excited!

I love how you told your family the news in different ways! That’s too bad that the dumplings note didn’t go as planned, but I’m glad you worked something out with the cookies :) I thought the baby themed dinner was such a cute idea too. I’m glad your mom connected the dots and made the realization, haha. I also wouldn’t have thought of using a math themed puzzle. You came up with such fun ideas! Congrats again!
