NaBloPoMo: Day 7 – Target invasion

NaBloPoMo: Day 7

All of the Zellers department stores are closing down in Calgary (and all of Canada). Target has bought all the stores and are closing them to make room for their own stores. I find it interesting that they are completely closing all the stores instead of keeping them open and renovating while still being open to the public. I hope the new stores are a lot like the US Targets, as I really do enjoy visiting those stores when I’m in the States.

Most of the Zellers stores have already shut their doors for good. The one closest to my house seemed to have been one of the ones that held out the longest. I went into the store a few weeks ago to see what kind of deals they had going on. Things were going for about 30% off. I went in again today because apparently there were only 6 more days for the store to be open. Anyway, it was chaos. There was stuff everywhere. Most of the shelves and aisles were empty. It reminded me of a ghost town, be it a very messy one. I walked around just a little bit but I was totally turned off by how messy and chaotic it was. When any kind of sales or discounts are on at a store, I find that people just go crazy. They don’t take care in the things they are looking through. The whole store looked as though a tornado went through it. I didn’t see any really good deals that interested me and so I got out of there pretty quick.

I used to love going into Zellers for clothes and seasonal things. I am sad that they are all closing. Especially since Zellers was a Canadian company and now it is being replaced by yet another American company. However, as I said above, I hope the new Target stores are just like in the States! The website says that the new stores should be opening in the Spring of 2013, so that doesn’t leave too long to wait 🙂

I was sad when I heard that Target bought out Zellers, too. I loved Zellers when I lived in Canada and it’s sort of disappointing that it’s just another American company moving in. But all that being said, I really love Target and I wish I had one in the (American) town I live in!
