Santa Shuffle

Santa Shuffle 2012My friend and I ran our 2nd annual Santa Shuffle 5km fun run on Saturday. It was so fun. I have to say that neither of us were looking forward to this race. It hadn’t stopped snowing since Thursday and it was so cold outside. The windchill was really what made us worry, but we both committed and paid the race entrance fee. It was time to run!

I woke up early enough so that I could make a pecan pie before the race (a complete fail of a pie btw). I ate some breakfast and then started putting on the layers. I had on 3 pairs of pants, 2 long sleeved shirts and a jacket. I went out to shovel the walks before I left for the race and within 5 minutes, I was frozen. NOOO! If I was this cold now, the race was not going to be fun. I told myself that I would warm up as soon as I started running, but it’s the waiting around for it to start that was going to be hard.

I met my friend at the race location and she had brought some Christmas bells for us to wear. So festive. We went to the bathroom one more time and then headed out to the starting point. We only waited outside about 30 seconds before the race began. It was very slick and slippery out. Yes, they had tried to clear the snow off the running path, but as it was continually snowing, it was a hard task. I took it a little slower and made sure not to lose my footing. Santa Shuffle 2012 Almost immediately, I regretted all the layers I wore on the upper half of my body as that is where I got overheated. To tell the truth, my legs were actually cold. It’s weird how half my body was hot and the other cold. Oh well. At the halfway point of the run, there was a volunteer in a t-shirt and shorts!! He was absolutely crazy in my opinion!

I finished the race at 29:15. I was aiming to complete it under 30 minutes, so I am very happy. Plus, it was very slippery out and I didn’t run as fast as I normally would have. My friend zoomed past me and finished around 26:30 I think. We were both pleased that we didn’t freeze our buttocks off. Haha. Although we didn’t exactly run “together,” it was nice to have a friend in the race to see before and after. I am so glad we’ve made this a yearly thing!!

Haha, and look at the cute little medal that we got for being a finisher of this fun run! We also got some free subway sandwiches and a Lindt Lindor chocolate advent calendar.

Congratulations on achieving your goal of completing in under 30 minutes! You must be so proud you went through with it despite the weather. And that medal is so cute πŸ˜€
