Love Letter

I wake up
On a Saturday morning
I lie in bed
For just a few more minutes
I stand up
My eyes are barely open
As I slowly trod over to the office

I don’t know why
This is the first thing I do
It’s way too early
The sun has yet to rise
I think about
Going back to bed
As I push the ‘on’ button

The machine in front of me
Whirrs with life
As I turn the screen on
My eyes squint
At the sudden light
This technological wonder
Beeps and creaks with thought
As is acknowledges everything
It’s learned over time

As it awakens
I nearly fall asleep
In the chair
I’m so tired
But something keeps me here
I don’t know what
But for some strange reason
My body will not budge

The login screen appears
I click my icon
It recognizes my name
And it finds my information
I stare at the screen
For five minutes
Before I realize that
It’s completely loaded
And I have
One unread
E-mail

The arrow hovers
Over the word ‘read’
My brain says “sleep”
But my hand says “click”
I debate with myself
Before my hand wins
And the cursor
Selects
‘Read’

As the page loads
My pulse quickens
As my heartbeat rushes
Trying to win
Some unknown race
The mail appears
And I begin
To read

At first
I’m puzzled
But my confusion
Turns into excitement
As my heart pounds
Even faster
I finish reading
And I lean back
In the chair
My mouth gaping
In surprise
And amazement
I just finished reading
My first love letter
From my best friend
